The Trinity Lutheran Family would like to introduce you to our Pastoral Staff and Partners in Mission and Ministry …

Senior Pastor

Barney Matocha

Pastor Barney came to Trinity Victoria in July of 1980 as associate pastor after having graduated from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina. He served as Intern of St. John’s Lutheran in Ocean City, New Jersey. He also enjoyed seminary field work at St. John’s Lutheran Piney Woods, South Carolina. He also completed CPE at St John’s Hospital in San Angelo Texas. Pastor Barney began his current position as Pastor of Trinity in 1995.

Being a native Texan, Pastor Barney majored in Theology at Texas Lutheran College, graduating in 1976.  He attended High School in Yoakum, Texas.  His Home Congregation was United Dr Martin Lutheran Church in Shiner Texas.

Pastor Barney is married to Leah Cordes Matocha (music teacher and church choir director/organist) and they have three children.  Matthew-athletic trainer at TLU, married to wife Monica; Scott-UTMB Physical Therapy graduate student, married to wife Maggie; Amanda – calculus/statictics teacher at John Marshall HS in San Antonio.  Barney and Leah delight in their grandson, Mason.
Pastor Barney loves the outdoors… tennis, baseball, hiking-(especially at Luther Academy in Meeker Park Colorado), working in the yard with flowers and plants and photography.  He and Leah also love to dance when the opportunity arises.

Pastor Barney says, “The Trinity Family is good at welcoming people and making them feel at home!”  Trinity is a genuine community of faith with a history and heritage of steady humble service.  One of Pastor Barney’s greatest joys is seeing the people of Trinity blossom into capable, kind and loving leaders.  So many are “salt and light and leaven” making a significant difference without calling attention to themselves. Together God has blessed us in wonderful warm ways.  We invite you to find that experience here too!

In Christ’ Name…Welcome ! ! !

Kara Hairell

Kara came to Trinity Victoria in July of 2012 as Youth and Family Minister after serving 10 years as Youth and Family Minister in Pflugerville, Texas at Immanuel Lutheran.  She graduated from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota and was Commissioned as an Associate in Ministry at Immanuel in Pflugerville on September 19, 2010.

Kara is a native Texan, graduating from (Southwest) Texas State University majoring in Psychology and minoring in Music. She also is a Yoakum High School graduate.  Her home congregation, sadly, is no longer ELCA.  So, she proudly claims Immanuel Lutheran Church as her home congregation until now, where she claims Trinity as home!!!

Kara has 2 “Children”, Bella, a 5 year old Yorkshire Terrier and Mr. Poquito, a 2 year old Yorkshire Terrier. They are the loves of her life, her official office greeters and her travel companions.

Kara loves being outdoors, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, counting stars, and taking the kids to the boundary waters every 3 years in Minnesota.  When not in the office you can find Kara somewhere in the country or out on the water.

Being at Trinity has been so heartwarming. The people here have welcomed me with open arms and they do the same with everyone who walks through the doors.  They are truly genuine.  If you want to see an extension of Christ’s arms, heart, smile and work, look no farther.   You have found it here at Trinity.  They are willing to serve along side each other and are always welcoming more people to serve along side and looking for more opportunities to serve the community.  We look forward to seeing you and worshiping side by side.

Together in HIS service,

<><
Kara

Music Director

Leah Matocha

Leah Matocha

Leah just happened to come along to Trinity with her husband Pastor Barney in July, 1980!

As music director, she leads the music in worship on the pipe organ and the piano. Directing the Joyful Noise Choir, Bells of Joyful Sound, and rehearsing any special singing/rhythmic groups are part of her music ministry. She also led Trinity’s Kids of the Kingdom children’s choir.

She has taught elementary music, private piano, and is currently teaching group piano at Liberty/VCAL (Victoria Area Center for Advanced Learning) High School.

Leah graduated from Texas Lutheran University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Music Education, All-Level Degree with pipe organ and piano being her principle instruments. She has continued her music studies at Baylor University/Alleluia Conference for the past 11 summers.

Pastor Barney and Leah have 3 grown children of whom you can read about in Pastor Barney’s story above.

Leah enjoys the creative side of church music – planning hymns for the congregation, selecting anthems for the choir that hopefully speak to the choir members and congregation, and involving students with playing music. She says, “My desire is for worshipers to realize the important role that music plays in worship and ministry, and to experience the variety of ways and styles that can be used to make worship meaningful. Anyone who has a love of music and would like to participate, we can always include you somewhere!”

Leah’s hobbies include doing things with family, anything with music–reading music books or attending a concert, hiking, yoga, watching a good movie, organizing, and observing the beautiful yard and flowers at the house that Barney works hard to maintain!
