Holy Spirit – Dove or Wild Goose!
20 Aug 2015
Ah, the beloved symbol of the Holy Spirit is the Dove. Gentle. Soft. Comforting. Jesus sent the promised Spirit to do that, to comfort the afflicted. But there is another symbol of the Spirit chosen by the Celtic Church perhaps more accurately descriptive of the Spirit….The Wild Goose! Wild Geese are noisy, raucous, loud even annoying and unnerving! That too is the work of the Spirit… to stir us, unsettle us, trouble us, ruffle our feathers when necessary. This Advocate at times has to agitate us and even run us through the ringer! All for our good!
A Prophet’s Purpose: To Afflict the Comfortable & To Comfort the Afflicted!
31 May 2015
Pentecost ushers in the Holy Spirit, a mighty rush of wind! Wind can blow things around, unsettle things, turn things upside down! or Wind in the form of a gentle breeze can cool and comfort from the heat! God’s Spirit can and does do the same. His prophets Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel unsettled complacent people to stir them to return to God. Their refusal led to Exile, pain and depression. Broken in spirit, the same prophets speaking for God breathe New Life into Old Dry Bones and supply Protection from Fiery Furnaces and Dangerous Dens of Lions. His Spirit does the same for us, troubling us when necessary and comforting us when essential!
